Keeping Nebraska Local: Natural Resources Districts Protect Nebraska's Water Quantity

Protecting Water Quantity explains the evolution in water policy and management practices since the inception of the NRDs in 1972. Using conservation measures, augmentation projects, and retiring irrigation acres in the Republican and Platte River Basins, and in partnership with area ag producers, hydropower producers and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, strides have been made in restoring and maintaining groundwater and streamflow levels. In the Niobrara Basin, five NRDs have struck a historic agreement with Nebraska Game & Parks Commission and Nebraska Public Power District that promises to the needs of ag producers, wildlife and endangered species habitat, and river recreationalists into the future.
