The Lower Niobrara NRD in Butte, Nebraska, seeks a full-time Water Resources Coordinator. The Water Resources Coordinator reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and managing the District’s ground water programs. These programs include Nitrogen Management Certification, Ground Water Quality Management Areas, Ground Water Management Plan, in-field data collection, data analysis, expanded irrigated acre programs, and the Integrated Management Plan. All programs are to be managed within the scope of Board policies, rules, and regulations.

Examples of Work

  • Collect water samples and measure static water level throughout the District.  Record, analyze, and map the collected data.
  • Pump and sample dedicated monitoring wells.  Record, analyze, and map the collected data.
  • Collect and record flow meter data.  Maintain a list of District approved flow meters.  Analyze the need and implementation of a mandatory flow meter program.
  • Develop a yearly District water report every spring.
  • Perform acre and well rankings as needed for variances and expanded irrigated acre programs.
  • Responsible for producer compliance regarding Phase II crop reporting forms.  Develop a yearly report on the data received.
  • Develop, review, and modify District maps related to ground water quality and quantity.
  • Generate reports as needed and submit required information to appropriate agencies.
  • Conduct Nitrogen Management Classes and maintain certification records.
  • Coordinate and conduct informational meetings and public hearings when necessary.
  • Attend relevant meetings and conferences. Including all Board of Directors meetings.
  • Supervise a summer intern when available.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

Ability to establish professional and effective working relationships with Federal, State and City officials, co-workers, Board members, community organizations and/or members of a diverse population.

Knowledge and abilities in ArcGIS

  • Ability to analyze large data sets and to present appropriate facts and/or recommendations in written and/or oral form and interpret and/or apply policies and regulations. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and comprehensive reports and effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 
  • Work is performed in the field and in an office setting.  Physical demands are average.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a two-year or technical college with major coursework in Natural Resources Management, Agricultural, Soil Science, Water Resources, or related field, plus 2 years work experience in natural resources, agricultural business, education and/or resource planning, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the desired knowledge, skill, and ability.     

Necessary Requirement

  • Possession of a valid State of Nebraska driver’s license and a good driving record when operating District vehicles is necessary to the satisfactory performance of assigned duties.
  • The District will help you acquire and maintain Natural Resources Ground Water Technician Certification.
  • The District will help you acquire and maintain Chemigation Applicator Certification.
