Lower Niobrara NRD Hosts Annual 8th Grade Conservation Day
BUTTE, Nebraska — The Lower Niobrara Natural Resources District (NRD) hosted its annual 8th Grade Conservation Day on Sept. 22, 2026, at the Butte Golf Course, bringing together 95 eighth-grade students from six area schools for a day of hands-on learning and outdoor education.
Students from Niobrara, Verdigre, Boyd County, Rock County, Stuart, and Burke schools spent the day enjoying the outdoors while learning about Nebraska’s natural resources and environment.
Throughout the day, students participated in educational sessions covering a variety of conservation topics, including biodiversity, water quality, fire and trees, Nebraska birds, Nebraska turtles, and the duties of the Nebraska State Patrol.
Students also had the opportunity to hear from State Senator Barry DeKay (District 40) who spoke about his duties and responsibilities as their elected official.
The 8th Grade Conservation Day would not be possible without the many natural resources professionals from across Nebraska who volunteer their time and expertise to educate the students. Presenters represented a variety of agencies, organizations, and communities, including the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Nebraska Extension through the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Lower Loup NRD, park rangers, the Ponca Tribe, Nebraska State Patrol, forestry professionals, and Lower Niobrara NRD staff.
The event provides students with an opportunity to learn directly from professionals who work with Nebraska’s natural resources while encouraging them to develop an appreciation for the outdoors and the importance of conservation.
The Lower Niobrara NRD extends a special thank-you to the Butte Golf Course for allowing the event to be held at its beautiful facility and for helping make this educational day possible.
The Lower Niobrara NRD appreciates all of the presenters, teachers, volunteers, and community partners who helped make the 2026 8th Grade Conservation Day a successful and memorable experience for the students.
