Lower Big Blue NRD Opens Recreation Areas April 16, 2026
Annual Fishing Derby Cancelled Due to Ongoing Drought
BEATRICE, Nebraska -- The Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District (NRD) will open recreation areas for the 2026 season on April 16, 2026. The recreation areas had been closed to vehicle access for the winter for the hunting season.
These recreation areas include:
- Walnut Creek Recreation Area, northeast of Crete
- Swanton Wildlife Management Area, north of Swanton
- Willard L. Meyer (Swan Lake) Recreation Area, east of Tobias
- Cub Creek Recreation Area, northwest of Jansen
- Big Indian Recreation Area, southwest of Wymore
After much deliberation, the Lower Big Blue NRD has decided to postpone the Youth Fishing & Casting Derby for 2026. With the continuing drought and critically low water level at Willard Meyer Recreation Area, bank fishing for children would be nearly impossible. The NRD will explore hosting the event again in 2027. We hope everyone will join us then.
The District thanks past Fish Derby sponsors and participants, who make the even a success.
The Lower Big Blue NRD has a brochure available that highlights NRD recreation locations. The brochure contains detailed information on each area, including charts indicating availability of fishing, hunting, boating, camping, picnic shelters, and much more.
